Child Safeguarding Statement

(STEM SW) is fully committed to safeguarding the well-being of all children and young people who participate in our events and activities. This Child Safeguarding Statement has been specifically prepared for STEM South West Events, which provide school-aged children with engaging opportunities to explore career pathways within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) sectors.

Our mission is to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where young people can learn, explore, and thrive. We believe that every child has the right to be protected from harm, to be listened to, and to be treated with dignity and respect.

Scope of Responsibility

While the primary responsibility for the supervision and welfare of children lies with their accompanying adult (e.g., teacher, parent, or guardian), STEM SW recognises its duty of care in creating a safe environment.

Safeguarding Measures

STEM South West has:

  • Conducted a comprehensive risk assessment specific to STEM South West Events.
  • Developed and implemented procedures to prevent harm to children, in line with the Children First Act 2015.
  • Ensured that all volunteers and representatives are aware of their responsibilities and receive appropriate Child Safeguarding Training.
  • Appointed trained Designated Liaison Persons (DLPs) to handle child protection concerns.
  • Put in place strong governance and accountability structures.

The Children First Act 2015 defines harm as ill-treatment, neglect, assault, or sexual abuse. STEM SW complies with all obligations outlined in this legislation and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of child welfare.
